I was gonna complain about #bluesky again but then realized that I really have no idea what people want out of decentralized social media. I want #DemocracyOfReach and BS will obviously fail on that front. but until there's any consensus on WHY we want our social media decentralized, maybe BS/AT will be enough for most people. do they just want to make it easier to leave if what happened at X happens again? they are preparing to fight the last war. building tanks/planes instead of drones. ugh.

This is an excellent point. The type of "decentralized" future Bluesky imagines is very different from what we have here in the Fediverse. To state it simply, Bluesky is not pitching a thousand points of light. Their network protocol does not scale "wide" (many instances) efficiently. Instead they talk about "credible exit", which while it has not been realized at all, comprises a handful of other big enterprises running platforms on AT Proto that you could, in theory, switch to.

@mastodonmigration @wjmaggos At the moment I don't think Bluesky is even living up to it's credible exit claim. Blacksky is held up as evidence of Bluesky's "decentralization" and yet someone on Blacksky got globally suspended from the network by being banned by bsky.app

yes I think we're gonna learn a lot watching this play out.

it's stepping down from what they previously claimed if I recall correctly (I mean they've misled verging on lying so much so far) but they'll probably say that everybody could just switch to a new relay and appview. as long as everybody does that, connections preserved etc. better than having to move from X to bluesky, but not by much.

fully agree but on our side, I'm really not sure what we are selling. I get the sense that most of the people here just don't want to be on corporate social media. It feels icky for lots of reasons. but we have those people. I have my vision and I think it should be compelling to everybody of course, but I don't know what we're offering that's appealing to normies.

Elon spikes adoption on both cause he threatens the exp for non cons. We now had a product for them he didn't.
