Yes, there were still a few people in iron lungs when I trained in the late sixties/early seventies. And on the same subject I'll never forget seeing children in the children's hospital in Manchester with measles and mumps encephalitis and permanent brain damage (if they survived). We have largely forgotten the terrible toll that childhood infections took and need a wake-up call (and a visit to any churchyard to see the graves of those who died before vaccines).

I pity any Foundation doc these days who has to go through that.
Then as a GP I watched a similarly aged boy slowly fade away from SSPE, gastly.
Two totally presentable deaths of young people.
I was shown a young child with acute polio whilst training, fortunately they made a good recovery, but...
