Alternative explanation to "people with aphantasia still have decodable visual information" is the Daryl Bem ESP explanation: the method is broken. I personally trust people's self reports of aphantasia and the idea that visual cortex does something more than I trust "neural decoding"

@jonny from a quick skim it looks like the classic fMRI interpretation error of jumping from “the brain is not dead, is doing something that is not perfectly stable” to “there is meaningful, interpretable signal” without appropriate control comparisons to differentiate the two possibilities
