@Tupp_ed As an artist, I don't understand Berger's concept of religiosity yet (I have to watch the video) but I'm glad that you talk about the disgust feeling.
I once had this extreme feeling when playing a little search game on my mobile phone with drawn scenes. After two minutes at the latest, I felt bad. Until I realised that no one had drawn here. I noticed the distortions, the hallucination of AI in small details.
I didn't understand from where the disgust came, even looking at idylls. 1/2

@Tupp_ed 2/2 Then I noticed it. I'm synesthete, I see-hear-feel fine arts (even via photo). I see-hear colours.
The surprise for me: I can see AI-generated images. But only see them. They are therefore completely empty for me, not even filling a dimension. It's hard to describe, but imagine an image robbing you of your sense of sight.

@allancavanagh Thanks! 😊 I don't know if all #synaesthetes feel this way, because the connections between the senses are absolutely individual.

@NatureMC my partner (and I) are curious - do edited images (such as high dynamic range) stand out in a distinct manner from non (or minimally) edited ones for you?

@NatureMC@Tupp_ed I'm also synaesthetic to an extent, days have colours and sounds have images/colours. What you said though is a novel concept around AI (and I've exposed myself to A LOT of AI-related stuff over last year) and I'd love to know if other #synaesthetes report the dead sensation generative AI images gives you.

@NatureMC Wow, this is fascinating. And it makes me wonder whether synesthetes with your sensory capabilities could make a living as detectors of AI images, e.g. when images are presented as evidence in court or similar, so need to be genuine and not faked.

@ixtility Unfortunately, no. If I could, I would be THE fact checker in my profession (journalism). 😁
The problem with synaesthesia is that you have not only a very individual "dictionary" in your brain (so nothing for solid evidence) but also different connections from case to case (e.g. I experience "concerts" watching Kandinsky's art but less with a black/white drawing).
3rd problem: You learnt to filter which means that I describe a picture like others and keep the sounds for me. 😉 1/2

@ixtility 2/2 I made this test, how much I can detect: https://detectfakes.kellogg.northwestern.edu/ and despite a high hit rate, I make mistakes like others.

The feeling of disgust is strong with AI "art". For fact checking of photos and videos we need more and more software and scientific methods because deepfakes achieve a shocking degree of being reality-like. A group practising these fact checks is @Bellingcat - it's hard work.

I think also people without synaesthesia know the feeling of disgust. When the first pictures appeared with too many and misshapen fingers, many people found it disgusting. This subliminal feeling that something wasn't made by humans. If Picasso had painted a hand with 7 twisted fingers, the result would feel completely different.

@NatureMC that’s wild and really interesting. Even without synesthesia, they always feel flat and lifeless to me.
