@mastodonmigration The truth is that Bluesky is owned by a centralised entity that hasn't been shy about disclosing its for-profit plans. Mastodon and the greater Fediverse will never have ads and subscription models.
@mastodonmigration I get way more engagement on Mastodon than I do on Bluesky. No idea why that is.
@mastodonmigration A bunch of reporters I know made accounts in 2022 and received messages telling them reporters aren't welcome here, so they left.
I realize it's a small number of people who feel that way but it had a real effect.

One particular memory of mine viz reporters and Mastodon is that Taylor Lorenz got kicked off twitter by Elon back in Dec '22 for a few days, sought support here (pre-bluesky), picked up a couple hundred thousand followers, and then returned to twitter as soon as he reinstated her
I believe what you're saying, but I missed any "chase reporters away" drama. It's sad that that happened. Many of my earliest follows were journa.host people

However, there seems to me to be an issue for reporters: until enough of their sources use Fediverse, they've got to be in the other place. It really annoys me how few public bodies have Fediverse feeds. Many here only use Fbook that you have to login to read!
Just read a post about how people on Bluesky are repeating these types of criticisms, and they were frustrated that people are so affected by what a few people say that they leave. It's not the policy of the platform, it's just a few people, and they're much less vocal now anyway. Just block them. One would think reporters of all people would be more thick skinned. This is a public resource. We can shape it however we want. Reporters can be a big part of public social media.
Oh, and remember the Taylor Lorenz saga very well. 🤦♂️

@mastodonmigration Going to start posting here a bit more often. But not leaving BlueSky anytime soon as I enjoy it there as well. I just need to stop forgetting about this place. Although I still don't like the halfway effective block function.
What do you mean by 'halfway effect block function'?
@mastodonmigration It only works one way. When you block somebody on here you no longer see them. But they can still see you. Especially if their looking in from another fediverse. A full proper block would seal them away from you completely instead of allowing them to still stalk your posts.
Got it. Agree with you. Blocking behavior and reply controls have been a big discussion here for a long time. One of the reasons that so many Black users have left is that the way reply controls now work creates the opportunity to harass someone without it being publicly visible. Yet limiting replies like this also has beneficial uses.
Is that how blocks work on Bluesky? Thought everything was public over there, but no expert.
That's not true, but it does require your server to have enabled so called "authenticated fetch". Meanwhile, on Bluesky not only are all of your posts viewable on the firehose and alt-apps to everyone, your blocks are also public. There are apps to follow who blocks you. The official Bluesky app just doesn't tell you any of this.

The most common sentiment I see on BS is, "Content warning: eye contact. lol. Never going back there."
It's not the tech; it's their impression of the user base based on extremely limited engagement. They use that line the way Republicans trot out 'deplorables'
The general sentiment is people here are too sensitive (see above) or scolds about alt text

Certainly know about that reputation, but it has mellowed quite a bit. These impressions were mostly formed at a time when Mastodon was going through a major cultural shock from the influx of new Twitter migration users. The bossiness is a lot less prevalent now.
That's why they should come on back and check it out.

I'm saying Bluesky users are convinced that it's 80% of Mastodon posts, and they don't want to be convinced otherwise. It flipped a 'turn off' switch in them and the contempt is embedded now, which is why I compared it to the way Rs won't let go of deplorables
Yup. Bad reputations are hard to break.
