Why don't we have a law mandating bikes have permanently fitted lights from the dealer?

Forget those cheap lights with batteries that are always dead when you need them. LED lights use so little power that they can be permanently on without any noticable resistance. It's not like the old dynamo lights that doubled the rolling resistance and didn't work in the rain.

I've had magnet lights permanently mounted on every bike I've had for probably 15 years, and there are better lights if you have the skills or are willing to pay to have them installed.

Imagine if cars had lights as an optional extra...

Bicyclist are already fined when driving without light. Just add 15 euro's to it. Equip the police officer with a bag of 2 euro led-lights and issue these including the ticket. Instant safety instead.

@randahl One year at Burning Man I took dozens of bike lights and gave them away to any unlit bikers I encountered in the dark. Not practical for supplying a whole country, but it sure feels good to light up a few darkbikes.

@randahl i would say (as someone who has ridden his bike to work for the past two years) that most people (while in the city) would be helped the most by:

- putting on a reflective traffic vest or wearing a reflective cycling jacket
- wearing a god damned helmet

It's scary the amount of 15-20 year old that just ride in their smart grey-black jackets with no helmet on. AND NO LIGHTS. I'm 99 sure it's because the helmet ruins their hair and the traffic vest looks uncool.

But wtf do i know 🤷‍♂️

@randahl Darwinian bonus points for wearing dark clothes on a bike without lights. To be fair: it doesn't take a low IQ to be extremely stupid.
